A 71-year-old woman from Loudoun County, Va. was driving her SUV down the highway when a deer stepped in front of her car, the collision sending it airborne and flying into a 27-year-old woman going for a jog on a nearby path, NBC Washington reports. Both women were hospitalized.
While hitting deer while driving is a common threat, being struck by a flying deer is a bit more peculiar. Officials report that the accident took place at around 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5. and both women were taken to the Lansdowne Campus of Inova Loudoun Hospital for treatment and released Friday morning.
Andrew Disilvestre, whose home backs up the path that the jogging woman was injured on, noticed what looked like a car accident on Thursday night, and on Friday morning, told local News4 that he had spotted "some big vultures flying around [a] dead deer."
"It's certainly an anomaly... that's a surprise, " Disilvestre said upon learning of the incident. "I might look out for deer next time I'm jogging."
Other Ashburn, Va. residents expressed surprise and concern after News4 reporters told them what had happened to the woman while jogging.
"That's pretty amazing," Michael Valmont, who works out at a gym near the scene of the accident, told News4. "I don't know what the statistics are for that but it's pretty low."
