Florida Student Shot at West Orange High School: Administration Lifts Lockdown, Victim is Reportedly Being Treated at Hospital

A Florida high school student was shot on Wednesday afternoon, causing the entire school to be put on lockdown.

"There has been an incident in which one student was shot," West Orange High School principal Douglas Szcinski posted on Facebook at about 2 p.m. "That student is alert and is being transported to the hospital. Law enforcement is on the scene working the situation."

Szcinski also noted that the campus was being searched, and law enforcement was "following all safety procedures and precautions."

As of 4:15 p.m. EST, the lockdown ended, Reuters reported.

Spokesperson from the Sheriff's Office Ginette Rodriguez told the Orlando Sentinel that the students still on campus were being transported by bus to nearby Ocoee High School to be picked up by their guardians and parents. Rodriguez also added that the student who was shot was rushed to Orlando Regional Medical Center immediately after bullets were fired.

16-year-old WOHS student Kaitlyn Hawkins told the Sentinel that she was standing around 50 feet from the victim when he was shot in a bus loop. She said the shooter was a boy who'd been previously suspended from school, but she wasn't aware of his identity.

Before shooting, the suspended boy reportedly delivered two punches to the victim's face.

"They were fighting, over what, I don't know," Kaitlyn told the Sentinel. "It's very sad."

Another student who didn't hear or see the shooting said that the fight happened between two students at the end of the school day. He did witness the victim sprawled out on the ground twitching, in an event that he called "chaotic," as school authorities raced to locate the gunman.

Officials said the argument was rooted in a long-standing dispute between the two students.
