Florida Immigration Reform Fasters Switch Shifts With Activists After Weeks of Hunger Striking

Three advocates of immigration reform who have been fasting for three weeks on the National Mall to put pressure on legislators have switched out with a group of new strikers.

U.S. Rep Joe Kennedy, Jr. was among the crew of new fasters, according to the Associated Press.

Advocates nationwide have publicized their support for the group of activists by joining in on the fast, which, according to USA Today, hopes to push Congress to vote on an immigration reform bill that was initially passed by the Senate, then stopped by House Republicans in June.

Politicians have also stated their solidarity with the group - AP reported that about six congressional legislators, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, visited the tent while exhausted fasters filed out, Tuesday.

The President and First Lady visited the fasters on Friday, after releasing a statement thanking organizers Eliseo Medina and Dae Joong Yoon, along with "all of the fasters for their sacrifice and dedication, and told them that the country is behind them on immigration reform."

The bill that activists are pushing will widen a deferred action policy that eases up on children who were illegally brought to the United States." Many have urged the President to stop deportations of undocumented immigrants, USA Today reported.
