A cuddly, 12-week-old German shepherd got her first-hand experience behind the wheel when she drove her owner's car into a Massachusetts pond on Sunday, MyFoxBoston reported.

Rosie the puppy was going for a walk with her owner, John Costello, by Bolivar Pond in Canton when he got into his car and turned on the vehicle. But Rosie somehow got caught up in the gas pedal and chaos ensued.

"The dog jumped in and hit the gear shift and the car jerked and she fell on top of the gas pedal," Costello told MyFoxBoston. "It was just scary."

The joy ride ended with the car going straight into the water, nearly 30 feet from the pond's shore.

"The car went for a swim. We all did," Costello said.

Costello said he jumped out of the car and tried to take Rosie with him, but the scared puppy jumped into the back seat.

A man who was working nearby saw the incident and came to Rosie's aid.

"Puppy was scared and ran to the back seat," Eric Hermann told the station. "The front door was open, [we were] trying to get him out the front door, coax him."

Costello and Hermann were eventually joined by another man and the three raced to get Rosie out of the car.

"By the time we got the puppy out, the car had slid and we had to do a little swimming," Hermann told MyFoxBoston.com.

Canton police and the fire department helped fish the car from the water, but the vehicle suffered irreparable damage. Costello told the station he has insurance to cover the loss.

"I've never heard of a puppy driving a car into a pond," Officer Robert Quick told the station.

Quick tweeted a picture of the daring pup after the incident with a cheerful caption.

"The perp says she was just going with the flow of traffic."
