A woman is Nevada allegedly shot her 11-year-old son as he slept in an attempt to commit a murder-suicide, CBS News reported.

Shavon Carrillo, 31, appeared in Las Vegas Justice Court on Thursday for charges including attempted murder and child abuse, where the judge set her bail at $1 million.

The incident occurred on Monday in their Las Vegas apartment. Carrillo allegedly told authorities she shot her son because she was so upset over her recent divorce with his father after 12 years of marriage.

A police report claims Carrillo whispered "I love you" before pulling the trigger and critically injuring the boy.

Before she was able to shoot herself, her brother-in-law grabbed the .22-caliber rifle from her hand and call for help, according to CBS News.

She also admitted to using methamphetamine before shooting her son, who remains in critical condition at a Las Vegas hospital. Officials said he is not expected to survive.

In addition to her brother-in-law, Carillo's two daughters were in bed in the same room when their brother was shot. None of them were injured.

Carrillo, who also goes by Shavon Aguilar, remains in Clark County Jail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 13.

One of Carillo's friends, who declined to identify herself, defended the mother of three to The Las Vegas Review-Journal.
