Casey Kasem fans held a vigil in honor of his 82nd birthday on Sunday.
Supporters of the former host of "American Top 40" and the original voice of Shaggy in the popular 1970s cartoon series "Scooby-Doo" held a vigil in honor of his 82nd birthday on Sunday. According to United Press International, the vigil was held outside the Berkley East Convalescent Hospital, where Kasem is currently receiving medical care.
The famous former radio is being treated for advanced Parkinson's disease and dementia. In a Facebook Post, Kerri Kasem, one of his three adult children, encouraged her father's fans to attend the vigil.
"I know this is short notice but it's my Dad's birthday this Sunday and we are having a birthday vigil for him from 6pm to 7pm outside of the convalescent home where he is being kept away from all who love him," she wrote in a post on Saturday.
Kerri also encouraged fans who could not attend the vigil to pay their respects to honor the beloved radio personality on Twitter and Facebook.
Last October, a representative for Kasem's wife Jean told reporters that the 82-year-old's health was deteriorating rapidly and he had only a few months to live. In November 2013, his three adult children were denied conservatorship of their father, after waging a bitter battle with their stepmom Jean, who has been married to radio host for 30 years.
"We haven't heard anything from her yet. We're giving her a chance to respond privately, and if she doesn't, we're taking legal action," Kerri told the New York Daily News last October. "We love him, and everyone knows his kids and grandkids are a source of joy for him... My dad told us a long time ago we were not in the will, and we're OK with that. We've known that for years. I've never asked him for anything, nor have I asked Jean for anything."
