Former Philippine senator Antonio Trillanes IV recently made a decision to run as mayor of the Manila northern suburb of Caloocan in the archipelago's 2025 general election.

In a local media briefing forum on Sunday (Jan. 21), he said he was "98%" sure about running for a more localized position after years of being a legislator, noting that he would make a formal announcement by March.

Battling the Malapitan Dynasty

CNN's Manila bureau reported that Trillanes would be facing off against incumbent mayor Along Malapitan, who succeeded him as mayor of Caloocan after his father, Oscar, represented the suburb in the country's legislature.

Trillanes said he decided to seek a local post instead of attempting a Senate comeback or running as the first nominee of the Magdalo party list because he believed he could directly help people better as a mayor than as a lawmaker.

Should he win, he stressed that fighting corruption in the local area would be one of his priorities.

Prior to his political career, Trillanes was known as a junior military officer who instigated several coups during the presidency of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
