CES 2014: Yahoo Announces ‘News Digest’ iOS App

Yahoo announced a news aggregation and summary app called News Digest for iOS in its keynote at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Tuesday.

Months after high-profile acquisition, transformation, and hirings, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, spoke about her whole scheme for reviving the company's news business.

During her speech at the conference, she introduced a new app that will revamp the current format of news deliverance that has been taken over by the Web's immediate and "always-on" coverage.

Additionally, Apple Insider reports that the app is set to serve a couple of round of digests -- one in the morning and one in the evening - which will include nine stories and a countdown timer indicating the arrival of the next one.

With the use of the Yahoo-acquired Summly, the new app will offer algorithmic summaries and editorial selection of significant news articles.

Summly is a company that focuses on summarizing news reports and artificial intelligence technology.

Nick D'Aloisio, Yahoo's product manager for mobile and emerging products, stated in a Tumblr post, "We wanted Yahoo News Digest to revisit a content format that when read, led you to a sense of completion and conclusiveness, much like reading the newspaper did."

News Digest is designed to collect and sort a wide variety of up-to-date news stories with "atoms," and deliver its users "comprehensive, effortless, and complete" events and information around the globe. However, the iOS app is only compatible with iPod touch and iPhone, TechCrunch reports.

These "atoms," as Yahoo calls it, can be any of visual elements ranging from photos, videos, maps, infographics and article summaries that will aid readers to efficiently consume and enjoy the stories.

The 11MB News Digest app can now be downloaded from the iOS App store for free.

Aside from the new app launch, Mayer also also spoke about its expanding content strategy.
