Amazon announced it is offering their cloud services to China. If China accepts, it will be the 10th country to use the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud platform.
According to a Wall Street Journal report, the remote computing services division of Amazon.com offered the said services to a “select group of China-based and multinational companies.”
AWS senior vice president Andy Jassy, said: “China represents an important long-term market segment for AWS. We are looking forward to working with Chinese customers, partners, and government institutions to help small and large organizations use cloud computing to innovate and deploy faster, save money, expand their geographic reach, and do so without sacrificing security, availability, data durability, and reliability.”
Amazon said that the cloud services will be used to discontinue the “undifferentiated heavy lifting of IT for Chinese business.” Without the AWS, businesses operating in the country will have to make a huge investment to be able to create their own IT network or contract a provider of such service. However, not all business and providers can build a network which can be used optimally by the business needing it, thus making resources go to waste. Amazon offered their AWS services to prevent companies from doing just that.
This month, the Beijing Municipal Government and the Government of Ningxia Hui Nationality Autonomous Region signed a memorandum of understanding to reflect the intent of all parties to start the construction and development of the AWS cloud-computing service.
Executive Vice Chairman of the Government of Ningxia Hui Nationality Autonomous Region Ying Jiajun said, “This will help fully utilize datacentre and infrastructure resources in Beijing and Ningxia, and provide highly reliable and secure cloud services to millions of Chinese customers. The local presence of AWS will help to accelerate the pace-of-innovation of Chinese businesses and further bolster China's economy."
