US Naval Academy Sexual Assault Case Update: Attorney Requests Court Records from USNA

An attorney working on a sexual assault case in the U.S. Naval Academy has requested a series of court records, according to the Associated Press.

Lawyer Ryan Guilds sent an email to the superintendent of the academy this week requesting certain documents concerning the case, in which one woman accused two midshipmen of sexually attacking her.

Guilds asked for a report submitted by an officer involved in the investigation that urged the military court not to pursue the defendants. According to the 171-page report, the woman's testimony and story were called into question.

Superintendent Vice. Adm. Michael Miller still moved two of the three accused students to courts-martial, even though the investigating officer had advised against it.

Academy spokesperson Cmdr. John Schofield told AP that the academy has not yet decided whether to provide Guild with the papers.

Guild does have the option of obtaining these documents from a civilian court.

The woman in question was reportedly sexually assaulted during an April 2012 toga party at a house off-campus in Annapolis, Md.
