While on his delivery route on Saturday, Nov. 23, a U.S. postal worker was shot and killed in Landover, Md., ABC News reports, found at around 7 p.m. suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
"We're looking for any information that anyone might have about the individual responsible for the killing of the carrier or what may have transpired right before or right after," Frank Schissler, a U.S. Postal Inspector and public information officer for U.S. Postal Inspection Service Agency, told ABC News.
Tyson Jerome Barnette, 26, was found dead by the time Prince George's County police arrived to the scene. USPS reports that any person who "kills or attempts to kill a federal officer or employer while they are on official duties could face the death penalty."
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the letter carrier and his family during this very difficult time. We are all deeply saddened," Fredric Rolando, president of the National Association of Letter Carriers, told CNN. "The nation's letter carriers deliver the mail in every community throughout the country. This tragic incident highlights the need in all operational decisions about how and when mail is delivered to give priority consideration to the safety of these dedicated public servants."
Police do not yet know what motivated Barnette's murder, and Postal Inspector Frank Schissler told CNN that it happened with he was driving someone else's mail route. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is offering a reward of "up to $100,000, while police are offering one of up to $25,000 for information leading to an arrest and indictment in the case."
According to Schissler, there were no witnesses present when Barnette was shot.
