Two Gonzaga University students were put on probation for breaching the schools' weapons policy after one of them pulled a gun on an intruder at their off-campus apartment.
According to the Spokesman Review, seniors Erik Fagan, 21 and Daniel McIntosh, 23, initially faced suspension or expulsion as punishment for chasing an unwelcome visitor out of their apartment on Oct. 24 while holding a firearm. But the university told them on Sunday that they would be on probation for the remainder of their time at Gonzaga instead.
"We're happy that we are still here at Gonzaga," Fagan told the Spokesman on Sunday. "Our objective was to remain here because we do love this school and love being here."
Despite that, however, Fagan added that he and McIntosh intend to appeal their probations.
"That information going to be on our educational record, and anytime we go for a job interview and show them our transcripts, that information will be on there. We don't feel like we should be punished just for defending ourselves."
The school has not yet released a response on the issue, citing student privacy policies.
McIntosh reportedly chased an unknown man off of the doorstep of their Logan neighborhood apartment with his loaded Glock in tow, after the man tried to force the two students to give him money.
The students then alerted police and campus officials of the event. When officers arrived at their apartment, McIntosh told an official he followed the man with his firearm, and that he has a permit to hold a concealed weapon.
According to the university's policies, students are not allowed to hold guns in their homes if they live in an apartment or dormitory owned by the school, as Fagan and McIntosh did. They've been charged with four violations of university policy, the Spokesman reported.
