A pickup truck ran into a church van at a road in Hyattsville, Md., near the nation's capital late Sunday afternoon, killing four people and injuring 14 before the truck became engulfed in flames.

Those who were killed in the accident were the driver of the pickup and three people, including a young child, inside the church van, said Mark Brady, the spokesperson for Maryland's Prince George's County Fire Department.

Fourteen others, eight adults and six children, were brought to different hospitals. Eight people, including four children, were reported to be in critical condition while others allegedly suffered serious injuries, according to the Associated Press.

Brady said police believed the pickup rear-ended the van before it headed several feet farther up the road, lost control then crossed a double yellow center line into the van's path.

The van was struck on the right side after the pickup crossed over the line before the truck caught fire, he added, according to KSL.com.

Brady remarked that the crash was one of the worst scenes he had seen in his 40-year career, according to USA Today. The victims have yet to be identified, and the investigation of the accident is still ongoing.
