Two men in Canada are facing child pornography charges in relation to Rehtaeh Parsons, a 17-year-old girl who committed suicide after being allegedly gang-raped and bullied, CNN reported.
Names of the two men who were arrested from their homes in Halifax on Thursday were not provided by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Halifax Regional Police.
The family of Parsons claims her suicide was the result of her alleged rape in 2011, followed by a picture of the incident released online and via cell phones. She died on April 7 after being taken off life support as the result of a suicide attempt a few days earlier.
Both men face different charges. The first was charged with two counts of distribution of child pornography and the second was charged with one count of distribution and one count of making child pornography.
They were released after making a promise to appear in court on Aug. 15 since they were minors at the time of the alleged crime. Rehtaeh was 15 when she claimed to have been raped by four boys.
While no one has been convicted of rape, police officials have confirmed there was a picture that circulated of the crime. Police had originally closed the case due to lack of credible evidence but then reopened it in April "in light of new and credible information that has recently been brought forward to police."
Parsons' mother, Leah, told CBC News that the arrests have provided a bit of relief.
"I felt a little bit of relief, just to say, finally - like I hope - they keep saying they want to tell their side of the story, but they have never given a statement," she said. "The police have never spoken to them in all this time. So at least, here is your chance. Tell your side of the story."
