Maria Sharapova Fires Back at Serena; Williams Says She 'Personally' Apologized at Player Party (VIDEO)

Tennis stars Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams were in headlines over the weekend as the two took public jabs at each other. The war of words began in an article Williams did with Rolling Stone which was put online on June 18.

Williams has already come under fire for the article since in the interview she suggests a recent rape victim from a Steubenville, Ohio high school “shouldn’t have put herself in that position.”

In the article she also talks about Sharapova, according to FOX Sports.

"She begins every interview with 'I'm so happy. I'm so lucky' – it's so boring," says Serena according to Rolling Stones. "She's still not going to be invited to the cool parties. And, hey, if she wants to be with the guy with a black heart, go for it."

Stephen Rodrick, the article’s writer, puts in parentheses:

(An educated guess is she's talking about Sharapova, who is now dating Grigor Dimitrov, one of Serena's rumored exes.)

According to ABC News it was rumored last year that Williams and Dimitrov were romantically involved.

On Saturday, during a pre-Wimbledon press conference, Sharapova addressed the comments.

''At the end of the day, we have a tremendous amount of respect for what we do on the court. I just think she should be talking about her accomplishments, her achievements, rather than everything else that's just getting attention and controversy,'' said Sharapova according to Fox News. ''If she wants to talk about something personal, maybe she should talk about her relationship and her boyfriend that was married and is getting a divorce and has kids,'' Sharapova continued. ''Talk about other things, but not draw attention to other things. She has so much in her life, many positives, and I think that's what it should be about.''

Williams has been rumored to be dating coach Patrick Mourtaglou.

On Sunday, Williams decided to squash the whole thing telling reporters during her own pre-Wimbledon press conference that she personally approached Sharapova and apologized for her comments, according to CNN.com:

"I personally talked to Maria at the player party. I said; 'Look, I want to personally apologize to you if you are offended by being brought into my situation. I want to take this moment to just pour myself, be open, say I'm very sorry for this whole situation'."

Wimbledon began today. On June 19 Williams released a statement “reaching out to the girl’s family to let her know that I am deeply sorry for what was written,” according to FOX Sports.

''What was written — what I supposedly said — is insensitive and hurtful, and I by no means would say or insinuate that she was at all to blame,'' the statement goes on to say.

''I was definitely sad to hear what she had to say about the whole case,” commented Sharapova Saturday.
