1 Student Injured in Kentucky High School Shooting, Suspect Arrested

A student was injured after a shooter opened fire at a high school in Louisville, Kentucky, police said Tuesday.

The suspect, aged 15-16, was arrested, reports WDRB.com. Police had earlier said that suspect was a sophomore at Fern Creek High School, where the shooting took place and had fled the scene immediately.

The suspect was identified as Jaylen Russell. He was transferred to Albemarle High School this year from nearby West Montgomery High School, reports EnidNews.com. According to the Montgomery Herald, Russell was accused of a stabbing last year following an argument with another football player.

Authorities said that the wounded student sustained no life-threatening injuries.

"It appears it is an isolated incident that happened just inside the school," Officer Phil Russell said, reports Fox News. "Obviously a large crime scene, but it was isolated to just inside the building."

Heavy security was deployed at the school, including a Louisville Emergency Command Center. The school initially went to a level-five lockdown with students sheltering in place. According to the officials, parents were informed and they gathered at a nearby park to pick up their children.

Video footage showed an ambulance leaving the scene and students leaving with their hands behind their heads. The police continued searching the nearby wooded areas.

It was not immediately confirmed by the Jefferson County Public Schools officials as to what led to the shooting.

Dajon Rhodes, a 17-year-old junior at the school, was on the third floor when she heard the shooting. "I just heard a loud pow-pow and I took off running," Rhodes said.

"This is every parent's nightmare," said Jefferson County school board member Chris Brady. "This is one of these days you wish would never come."
