The Civil Wars are taking their final bow.
The four-time Grammy-winning folk group, which is made up of 31-year-old Joy Williams and John Paul White, has announced that they are parting ways, according to Entertainment Weekly. In a statement posted on the group's website, Williams and White explain the decision behind their separation.
"I am saddened and disappointed by the ending of this duo, to say the very least," Williams wrote. "JP is a tremendous musician, and I will always be grateful for the music we were able to create together. I'm so thankful and my heart is full."
She continued: "Looking ahead, I'm excited to share the music that I am writing and recording in the midst of this difficult transition. I've loved being back in the studio, and have missed performing live. I look forward to seeing you soon."
The decision to split comes nearly two years after the duo pulled out of a European fall tour in 2012 citing "internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition," according to Rolling Stone Magazine.
Neither White nor Williams released statements explaining the situation between the two. In 2013, White told Entertainment Weekly that "over time it became apparent that we both wanted different things."
In the statement, White added, "I would like to express sincere thanks to all who were a part of the arc of The Civil Wars - from the beginning, to the end, and all points in between. My deep appreciation goes out to all who supported, disseminated, and enjoyed the music. Whatever shape or form the next chapter takes, thanks for being a large part of this one."
After thanking their fans for their support, The Civil War offered a free download of "You Are My Sunshine," - which was recorded in 2010.
