Remy Ma Confirms Prison Release After Six Years with Instagram Message, ‘I’m Back’

Rapper Remy Ma was released from prison on Friday, Aug. 1 after serving six of her eight-year sentence. According to Billboard, the Bronx rapper was released from Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women this afternoon. Her husband, rapper Papoose, was the one to pick her up.

A rep for Ma also confirmed the news to Revolt. Shortly after returning home, the 34-year-old rapper informed her fans she was out by posting "I'm Back!!" on her Instagram page. Papoose also welcomed his wife home, writing, "Congratulations to the #Queen happy 2c you walk out that cage!!!!!! Time 2 begin a new chapter it's your time."

Ma also called Power 105's Angie Martinez to confirm that she was finally home.

"Earlier today (8/1), Remy Ma called me to me know she was listening to my show and to tell me she's back home! Remy Ma also said that her phone call to my show (7/21) was not the reason her released was delayed on Thursday (7/31). I'm so excited she's home," Martinez wrote.

There was a little confusion about Ma's release when reports surfaced that she was initially scheduled to leave July 31but when her husband showed up he was told Ma would have to remain in custody.

However, the two were photographed driving away from the prison in Papoose's car. In 2008, the "Conceited" rapper was found guilty of a 2007 shooting over stolen money. According to reports, Ma accused a friend, Makeda Barnes Joseph, of taking $3,000 cash from her purse. In a tug-of-war over the bag, Ma accidentally shot Joseph in the abdomen.

During court, Ma said the shooting was an accident but the jury ruled against her and she was convicted of intentional assault. According to the New York Times, the rapper intentionally pulled her car alongside Joseph's vehicle and climbed into the woman's car "with a cocked gun."

During the struggle the gun went off. After the shooting Ma fled the scene and the gun was never found, the New York Times reports. Hip-hop fans are excited Ma is free and have been posting their well-wishes on Twitter.
