Mother Gives Birth To 13 Pound Baby: Largest Newborn To Date At Whittier Hospital Medical Center In California

A baby girl twice the size of an average newborn was born Friday according to the Daily Mail. Yvette Camberos Hernamdez gave birth to a 13-pound, 10-ounce baby girl named Kaelyn Hernandez a week earlier than her expected due date.

Kaelyn was delivered by cesarean at Whitter Hospital Medical Center. The hospital credits Kaelyn as the biggest baby they've delivered to date.

"My pregnancy was good. I wasn't really showing so that's why I was surprised when I saw her and they told me her weight," said the California mother.

According to the Daily Mail, the weight of Hernandez's children increased over time. Hernandez's first born was the typical 8 pounds, 8 ounces and her second child weighed 10 pounds, 10 ounces. News crews gathered around the newborn who rested quietly and seemed unbothered by the attention her weight has brought her family.

Although baby Kaelyn's birth has shocked her mother and health care professionals within the Whitter Hospital Medical Center, she is not the first newborn to make headlines because of her enormous size.

In early March, a 15 pound 7 ounce baby was born in England. The babies large size was not predicted by doctors and with his size came complications at birth. His shoulders were stuck in the birth canal and additional doctors were called in to assist with his delivery.

According to the Huffington Post, Dr. Ghofrany, an OBGYN with Stamford Hospital, the increasing size of newborns are at risk for "enlarged organs, a fractured clavicle, and, like George's case, oxygen deprivation." Luckily, Hernandez did not experience any complications during the birth of Kaelyn. Kaelyn is reportedly 100 percent healthy.

The biggest baby in the world was born in Canada weighing in at 23 pounds, 12 ounces in 1879 according to the Guinness World Records.
