Couple Stabbing Over Idol: A Disagreement Over Who Should Win FOX's Singing Competition Turned Violent Quickly

It’s pretty normal for couples to have healthy discussion on whom they think should win a pageant, award show, or sporting event. However, a Pennsylvania couple may have taken it a bit too far.

Fourty-eight year old Karen Elaine Harrelson and 57-year old Gregory Stambaugh of York County, stabbed each other on May 15 in a disagreement over who they thought should win FOX’s “American Idol,” according to The New York Daily News. They had been strongly under the influence of alcohol for most of the day.

According to WHP-TV, the couple’s stories differ immensely.

Harrelson said she was going upstairs to get a slice of cake. Stambaugh went after her, slashed her with a knife, knocked her over the head, and flung her to the ground. His injuries came only because she had to defend herself. Stambaugh’s version of the story is the polar opposite.

He said he stayed in the basement where the couple had been watching the singing competition. She came back to the room with a knife and stabbed him in the arm.

He ran after her into the kitchen and stabbed her, by accident, as they were struggling for the knife.

According to York County police, authorities arrived on the scene to find the two seated on the porch with their clothes covered in blood. After their injuries were treated they were taken to York County prison. The couple was charged with two counts of assault and one felony count of aggravated assault.

According to the York Dispatch, Stambaugh is being held on $70,000 bail and Harrelson is being held on $30,000 bail.

Contestant Candice Glover won the 12 season of “American Idol”. Kree Harrison was the runner-up.
