Herbert and Catherine Shaible of Philidelphia have been charged with third-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, conspiracy and endangering the welfare of a child for the death of their son according to CNN.
Baby Brandon fell ill a few days before his death but his parents refused to see medical attention because of their religious beliefs. It has been reported that the Shaibles are "followers of a faith-healing-doctrine."
The charges filed were in accordance with an evaluation by a medical examiner. CNN is reporting the baby died of dehydration and bacterial pneumonia. Seth Williams, a Philadelphia district attorney, said the Shaibles admitted to noticing Brandon had fell ill but rather than seek medical help, the couple prayed for the child and "ultimately called a funeral director."
This is not the first time the Shaibles faith-healing beliefs resulted in the death of one of their children. In 2009, the couple's 2-year-old son, Kent, died from bacterial pneumonia and they were charged with involuntary manslaughter. No jail time was sentenced.
"One condition of their 10-year probation was a requirement that they seek medical attention and follow medical advice if any other children were to get sick in the future," said Ed McCann, First Assistant District Attorney.
The neglectful parents attended the First Century Gospel Church whose websites states a bible verse that can be interpreted as support for the Shaibles actions.
"By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong," it reads. "It is Jesus' name, and the faith that comes through him that has completely healed him, as you can all see."
Bail has not been set but prosecutors are hoping for a large sum to keep the couple behind bars.
