Cincinnati can tie the four-game series with a win on Thursday. The Reds snapped a two-game losing streak to Los Angeles on Wednesday with a 5-0 shutout, thanks to 12 strike outs from starting pitcher Johnny Cueto. The right-hander gave up no runs and just three hits en route to earning his sixth win of the season.
"That's the way it is," Cueto told the Associated Press through a translator. "I wasn't trying to strike everybody out, but they made me throw a lot of pitches."
Cincinnati took Dodgers starting pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu for four earned runs over six innings, handing him just his third loss of the season.
"We have a history here," Reds manager Bryan Price said of his team, which has overcome early-season injuries. "We have a real good understanding that we have players who have accomplished things at a high level here. You saw some of that tonight. Hopefully, it'll be a precursor to good things."
Reds pitcher Alfredo Simon (8-3, 3.15 ERA) is tasked with following up Cueto's performance. Simon heads into Thursday's game looking for his third straight win after giving up only three runs in Saturday's 6-5 victory over Philadelphia.
Opposing Simon will be Dodgers pitcher Zack Greinke (8-2, 2.62). He's struggled over his last three starts, in which he went 1-1 with a 4.35 ERA while giving up 11 runs, according to the Associated Press.
His last effort resulted in a no-decision in Saturday's 5-4 loss to Colorado, whom he allowed to score three runs.
"I pitched all right, but not making enough really good pitches was the key," Greinke said.
