As the dust settled Monday night and details surfaced of the devastating results of the two-mile wide Oklahoma tornado that has left over 140 people injured and dozens more dead, it seemed like everyone took to the Internet and Twitter to share their feelings about the staggering events.
Lizz Winstead, author of "Lizz Free or Die" and co-creator of "The Daily Show", was no different, but she may have taken it too far.
At a time when #PrayforOklahoma was one of the highest trending topics on the social media outlet, Winstead made a failed attempt at a political joke as she tweeted, "this tornado is in Oklahoma so clearly it has been ordered to only target conservatives." She also made a reference to the current IRS debacle when she said, "How long has Obama known about this Tornado?"
Well, it did not take long before the rest of American responded.
One user responded by saying, "As an Oklahoman, I don't think this was something that would result in my continuing to follow you."
The self-described Comedian/Writer/Producer/Troublemaker defended her comments, and for a moment, it seemed she was disregarding the severity of the situation all together, "If its no OK to YOU for me to combine news stories to point out hypocrisy AND Im not making fun of victims u shld Unfollow."
But as news about the cataclysmic aftermath of the mega storm spread, Winstead eventually apologized.
"Made a political joke, Twas before devastation revealed. In hindsight, had I understood, I would have refrained. Beyond sorry. #LetMeHaveIt."
Winstead later recommended donating to REDCROSS, and shared that she would tweet out any names of charities that Oklahomans would tweet to her.
