Police busted a Florida man whose last name is Cocaine for possession of drugs on Tuesday.
Edward Cocaine, 34, was released on his own recognizance after he was arrested in Pembroke Pines, near Miami, for possession of Xanax, the Sun Sentinel reported. Before that he appeared in a Broward County courthouse.
"My name is Cocaine," the Fort Lauderdale man boldly stated in court, the newspaper reported.
The courtroom erupted with laughter over the defendant's name. Even the judge could not believe his ears.
"You know, I thought I'd seen it all," John "Jay" Hurley said according to the newspaper.
"How many times have the police told you to step out of the car during your life?" Hurley asked Cocaine.
"Just about every time I get pulled over," Cocaine replied while laughing, the Sun Sentinel reported.
Cocaine is truly his real last name; it's even on his driver's license. But the judge still couldn't wrap his head around it.
"I'm still trying to absorb this," Hurley said, the New York Daily News reported.
The defendant explained to the court how he got his last name.
"My great-grandparents came over here from Greece and they changed it," Cocaine said, the Sun Sentinel reported. "That was like in the 1920s.
"Back then, they didn't even know," Cocaine added.
But Hurley was a bit skeptical.
"Or maybe your grandparents knew and just didn't tell anyone else, you know?" the judge said, the Daily News reported.
