Oakland can sweep Minnesota with another win. The A's (5-3) followed up their 8-3 win in the first game with a 7-4 win on Wednesday, thanks to catcher Derek Norris's three-run homer in the 11th inning.
Oakland starting pitcher Jesse Chavez gave up only one run through his six innings, but relief pitchers Sean Doolittle and Jim Johnson combined to allow three runs to draw Minnesota even.
Norris pointed to the dynamic of the team as the reason for how the A's were able to overcome the potential comeback from Minnesota.
"When someone doesn't come through the next guy comes up and fills in for him," Norris told the Associated Press. "... It's a nice chemistry we have here for that to happen."
Dan Straily (0-1, 4.50 ERA) starts for Oakland on Thursday. He gave up three runs on Saturday in a 1-3 loss to Seattle.
Twins pitcher Mike Pelfrey (0-1, 5.06) opposes Straily and is tasked with helping Minnesota avoid a home-series sweep. Pelfrey played well through the first four innings on Friday against Cleveland, but he ultimately gave up three runs in the 7-2 loss.
"It kind of ruins the whole day, no matter how the first four innings went," he said. "The game got away from me. It was kind of like a kick in the stomach."
