At least three law enforcement officers were fatally shot and several wounded while attempting to serve an arrest warrant in a North Carolina neighborhood Monday.

Among the deceased are a U.S. Marshal and two local task force officers, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said, according to CBS News.

"The U.S. Marshals Task Force, which is comprised of officers from multiple agencies, was conducting an investigation in the area of the 5000 block of Galway Dr when they were engaged by active gunfire from a subject," the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) wrote on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, shortly after 2 p.m.

"Multiple law enforcement officers have been struck by the gunfire and are being transported to the hospital. The CMPD SWAT team is currently on the scene."

At least one shooter died on the scene, police said, according to WBTV-TV. It's unclear how many shooters were involved.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper confirmed he was monitoring the incident in a post to X, shortly after 3 p.m.

"I am in contact with law enforcement concerning the tragic shooting in the Charlotte area, and we have offered state resources to help," he wrote.

Several nearby schools were locked down and highways were closed, while the crime scene remains active, according to the CMPD.
