Law enforcement personnel who arrived at the home located on Valley Way, Santa Clara, found the suspect with an "extremely swollen and purple arm." The Santa Clara District Attorney later said that his wife suffered "severe blunt force injuries to her head."

The incident started when Santa Clara police officers traveled to the home of the couple on Jan. 16, at around 11:00 a.m. after they received a welfare call. After arriving at the area, a friend of Chen said that he was "concerned" about the two and noted that the husband was "refusing to answer his phone or his door," as per the Daily Mail.

He also told law enforcement personnel that he could see Chen inside the house where he was "motionless on his knees, had his hands in the air and was staring blankly." The district attorney's office later said that the body of the suspect's wife was found inside the bedroom that was directly behind where he knelt.

The office noted that when police arrested Chen, he had blood on his clothing, legs, arms, and hands as well as scratches on his arm. Property records showed that the couple first bought the house in April last year for $2.05 million.

Following the murder charges against the suspect, his arraignment was postponed to Jan. 22, as he is still being treated at a hospital. District Attorney Jeff Rosen highlighted the rise in 911 calls related to domestic violence.

He also urged those who are in abusive situations to seek help, emphasizing that support is available for them. Google later responded to the incident by expressing profound shock and sorrow, according to the Times of India.

A spokesperson for the tech giant, Bailey Tomson, conveyed the company's condolences. He added that everyone at Google was shocked and deeply saddened by what had happened to Xuanyi.

Tomson said that their thoughts are with the victim's family and added that they will work to provide support to them and to co-workers who are processing the tragic news. The husband and wife involved in the incident were both graduates of Tsinghua University in China and the University of California San Diego.

The incident comes as Rosen said that domestic violence deaths have been on the decline across the country but argued that it does not measure the depth and destructiveness of the violence, said the San Francisco Chronicle.

Looking at their LinkedIn profiles, Chen was found to have been working on the YouTube shorts algorithm for Google while Xuanyi's page revealed that she was a software engineer.
