Many Americans and other people are excited to travel during the holiday season. They can relax at a beach or visit families, relatives, and friends whom they haven't seen for a long time.

But, going from one place to another during the busiest time of the can sometimes be a hassle, especially if you are traveling via an airplane.

One of the things that can happen to you is if you lose your luggage. If you already experienced this scenario or never encountered it before, here's what you can do if you accidentally lose your luggage.

First things first. When is luggage considered lost? CBS News explained that a a bag/luggage is considered a lost belonging if it can't be tracked between 5 to 14 days after being reported.

After that, the airline will ask for the accounting of items, especially valuables inside the lost bag. Staff might also ask for proof of content, such as receipts and photos.

Once confirmed that your luggage is lost, the best thing you can do is file a report via the airline's official website. For example, Delta, United Airlines, American Airlines, and other airlines have a section on their websites that passengers can use to report their lost bags.

But, before you even lose your luggage, there are some things you need to do to be prepared for this possible travel scenario:

  • Don't forget to take photos of your bag's exterior and interior, as well as the items inside.
  • If possible, book a non-stop flight so that the baggage check logistics process will be easier.
  • Always use your credit card when paying for a plane ticket and checked bag since credit card companies offer protection for lost luggage.
  • Remember to use your carry-on bag for medications and other similar valuables.
  • If you have an AirTag or other tracking devices, use them on your baggage.

What Compensations Can You Get?

Airlines offer compensation for lost baggage/luggage. For example, if you no longer have toiletries and other essentials for your travel because of the lost bag, the airline will help you replace them.

In some instances, lost baggage for domestic flights can be eligible for up to $3,800 compensation. If the price of the overall items you lost is higher than this, then the travel company is reliable to give you the amount.

Sadly, there are some instances when the airline will make it difficult for you to receive your compensation. According to CNN Travel, you can report this case to the Department of Transportation.

Remember, reporting to DOT doesn't mean that your compensation is guaranteed. But, authorities will be made aware of the disappointing experience you had with that airline.
