Recently, a The Wall Street Journal report said that a Chinese spy base in Cuba is already existing. The report also stated that the Chinese and Cuban governments reached an agreement to build an eavesdropping station on the island.

Aside from this, China also allegedly prepared to pay billions of dollars just to construct this facility in Cuba. However, John Kirby, the White House National Security Council spokesperson, said that the report is inaccurate.

Now, a Biden Admin official says otherwise.

The anonymous official said that this problem was passed to the Biden Administration after it took office back in January 2021. "This is an issue that this administration inherited," said the U.S. official.

He added that despite the U.S. intelligence community being aware of China's spying activities from Cuba, the government is "not making enough progress and needed a more direct approach."

Aside from these details, the U.S. official also clarified the denial of the White House regarding the WSJ report.

He explained that it was called an inaccurate report because it described eavesdropping as a new development. "This is an ongoing issue and not a new development," said the anonymous U.S. intel.

Alleged China-Cuba Spying Activities

ABC News reported that China is allegedly working with Cuba to spy on the United States since at least 2019. The Biden Admin official said that China even conducted an upgrade for its spy facility in Cuba back in 2019.

Aside from Cuba, the Chinese government also allegedly looks at new spying sites across the globe.

Among its targeted locations are Latin America, the Middle East, Central Asia, Africa, the Indo-Pacific, and the Atlantic Ocean.
