An employee at a Michigan tanning salon was arrested for allegedly filming female patrons inside of tanning booths after a customer discovered a hidden camera, the Lansing State Journal reported.
After authorities were called to Planet Fitness on Wednesday, the cell phone a 21-year-old customer found recording her was linked back to Trent Jannenga, 25, who claimed earlier that someone had stolen his phone.
However, Jannenga admitted to police during questioning that his phone wasn't stolen and he placed it in the booths himself. The owner of the business was unaware of his actions.
He also told officials that he had recorded several other women but erased the videos after watching them. Once police issued warrants to search his phone and home, they found no evidence of saved or shared recordings.
Jannenga is currently in jail on felony charges of capturing/distributing images of an unclothed person and false report of a felony.
Planet Fitness issued a statement to WZZM following the incident.
"The safety and privacy of our members is extremely important to us," the statement read. They also said the owner is working with authorities on the investigation.
Jessica Towne, who told WZZM that she regularly goes to Planet Fitness to tan, said she's never worried about someone watching her before.
"There is a rack in the corner where they keep the cleaning supplies and things like that. I've never thought to look behind there or check behind the booths but now I'm a little paranoid," she said.
