In the most recent move in their lengthy legal battle, Johnny Depp files a notice of appeal on Friday, contesting the Virginia jury's decision to pay ex-wife Amber Heard $2 million in damages.

Attempting to overturn the one count of defamation that his ex-wife Amber Heard won in their high-profile trial last month, Johnny Depp filed a notice of appeal on Friday, according to court documents.

The 59-year-old ''Pirates of the Caribbean" star is hoping the appeal will overturn the $2 million verdict Heard received from the jury over allegations that Depp's attorney made untrue and disparaging remarks about her.

Johnny Depp Quickly Counters Amber Heard's Appeal

Depp's latest lawsuit comes just one day after his ex-wife appealed the $10.35 million judgment she received in relation to Depp's claim that Heard's allegations of domestic violence in an op-ed article had defamed him.

According to a source close to Depp, the actor feels the judgement was largely in his favor and that it is now appropriate for him and Heard to go on with their lives and begin to mend.

However, the source claimed that because the 36-year-old actress added to the lawsuit with her appeal, Depp is counter-appealing in Fairfax, Virginia, court to make sure that his side is included in the record and that the appeals court takes into account all of the legal difficulties.

Depp first sought $50 million from Heard in his lawsuit. Although Heard did not specifically mention Depp by name in the Washington Post column, his attorneys said that it was an obvious allusion to her claims that he had assaulted her during their 2016 breakup.

According to NY Post, Heard countersued Depp for $100 million, alleging that she was defamed when Adam Waldman, Depp's attorney, publicly debunked her claims.

When Waldman claimed that she and her pals "spilled a little wine and roughed up the house, got their tales straight" when the police were called to the couple's home for a domestic disturbance call in 2016, the jury determined that one of her assertions was defamatory.

Johnny Depp Remains "Confident" in Legal Battle Against Amber Heard

Heard did, however, inform the Virginia court on Thursday that she would be appealing the decision as well as any decisions made by the judge following the verdict, such as denying Heard's request to declare a mistrial, dismiss the case, or order a new trial.

The six-week trial's testimony was mostly centered on Heard's allegations that Depp had mistreated her physically and/or sexually at least a dozen times. Depp argued that Heard was the abuser and that he had never struck her, as per Daily Mail.

Heard's attorneys requested a mistrial earlier this month, alleging that one of the jurors on the case should not have been allowed to serve since his summons was meant for his father, who had the same name and address.

Last Wednesday, Judge Penny Azcarate rejected the plea in letter, stating that there was "no proof of fraud or wrongdoing" on the part of the juror and that the jury's decision should remain.

After Amber Heard, Johnny Depp's ex-wife, announced her intention to appeal the decision in their defamation case, Johnny Depp has responded. A spokesperson for Depp stated in a statement obtained by Deadline that they are "confident" the verdict will stand.
