Schools in Romeoville, Ill. were put on soft lockdown after a gunman shot two people on Thursday.
Two unidentified victims were shot at about 7 a.m., Deputy Police Chief Bill Denney told the Chicago Tribune. The gunman opened fire on Emery Avenue.
The two were immediately transferred to nearby medical facilities, but their current states are not yet known.
Schools in the Valley View district were put on soft lockdown, as a precautionary measure.
According to the Tribune, The Irene King Elementary school is located just two blocks away from the site of the incident.
District officials told parents in an email to keep their children at home. They'd previously said it was alright for kids to attend their daily classes.
"Romeoville police are now advising that if your child has not left for school that you keep your child home until you hear otherwise," the statement obtained by the Tribune read. "VVSD buses are running their routes and any children at their stops will be picked up and taken to the Romeoville Recreation Center temporarily. Children already in schools will remain in school in a soft lockdown."
Police were still on the hunt for the shooter as of 8:30 a.m., Thursday.
Law enforcement officials installed a mobile command center in the immediate vicinity of the shooting site, the Tribune reported. Other police officers searched the backyards of homes in the neighborhood.
