A former Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) chemist was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly switching drug evidence with over-the-counter medicine, CNN reported.
Joseph Graves, 32, is accused of grand theft, 12 counts of tampering with evidence, and nine counts of drug trafficking, according to a statement released by the FDLE. It is possible for additional charges to be added.
"The actions of Joseph Graves are disgraceful. FDLE is working with State Attorneys' Offices statewide to ensure he is held accountable for his actions," said FDLE commissioner Gerald Bailey.
A lawyer for Graves has not commented on the case yet.
Officials said the case could affect multiple drug convictions and investigations in dozens of counties in Florida.
An investigation was initially launched after authorities in Escambia County discovered evidence was missing and later came across evidence packages containing over-the-counter pills.
Attorney General Pam Bondi issued a statement following the incident.
"The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is a top notch law enforcement agency. I continue to have complete confidence in them and their work. This situation simply underlines the extent of the problem our country faces with prescription drug abuse," Bondi said in an email.
