Two Massachusetts children died after being found unconscious inside of a hope chest in their home on Sunday, the New York Daily News reported.
The brother and sister were discovered by family members around 8:00 p.m. in their Franklin home, according to officials. They were quickly rushed to the hospital where they were eventually pronounced dead.
Police are still investigating the incident though both deaths appear to be an accident. A neighbor of the family, Mary Delfino, told the Boston Globe that the two kids -- the youngest of five -- locked themselves inside the trunk while playing.
"They were in bad shape," Delfino told the Globe. "They were crying and really sad."
Though Delfino was not exceptionally close with the family, she said they were very friendly neighbors.
"It's a nice family; they're very nice people," she added. "The children are very well-mannered, very well-behaved."
A spokesman for the Norfolk District Attorney's Office said the trunk they were found in could only be opened from the outside.
"Several family members were home at the time of the incident," spokesman David Traub said in a statement. "The hope chest was in relatively close proximity to a television that was apparently on with a substantial volume at the time."
Traud also said the family was fully cooperating with authorities.
The names of the victims, both under the age of 10, or family has not been released.
