Benghazi News: State Department Releases List Of Groups Behind Attack

The State Department on Friday released the names of several groups responsible for the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi in 2012, NBC News reported.

Of the different organizations, two groups -- Ansar al-Sharia and Ansar al-Sharia -- are based in Libya (Benghazi and Darnah, respectively). The State Department classified their leaders, Abu Khattalah and Sufian bin Qumu, as global terrorists.

Bin Qumu was released to Libyan authorities in 2007 after a five-year stint in Guantanamo Bay.

A third organization, Ansar al-Sharia in Tunisia, and its leader, Seifallah Ben Hassine, were listed as responsible too.

According to the department, the third group was also involved in an attack on the U.S. Embassy and an American school in the capital of Tunisia on September 14, 2012 -- just three days after the attack on Benghazi.

The attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi resulted in the death of four Americans, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens.

In November of last year, the State Department announced it was offering up to $10 million in rewards for anyone with information leading to the arrest or conviction of anyone involved in the attack.

In their announcement, the department said they are committed to working with Libyan officials to bring those responsible for the attack to justice.

"The U.S. Government is committed to taking all appropriate actions against the organizations and individuals responsible for the attacks against the U.S. diplomatic facilities in Libya and Tunisia," the statement read. "We remain committed to working with the Libyan government to bring the perpetrators of the September 11, 2012, Benghazi attacks to justice and to ensure the safety of our personnel serving overseas. Likewise, we continue to urge the Tunisian government to bring to justice those responsible for the September 14, 2012 attack on the U.S. Embassy in Tunis."
