Venice Beach Rampage Driver to Stand Trial: Los Angeles Judge Announces Murder, Assault and Fleeing the Scene Charges Against Nathan Campbell

A Los Angeles judge ruled on Wednesday that the man who reportedly barreled down packs of tourists with his car will go to trial for murder, assault and fleeing the scene.

Superior Court Judge Antonio Barretto announced that 38-year-old Nathan Campbell will stand trial on allegations that he crashed through crowds of boardwalk-goers in Venice Beach, Calif. last summer, causing the death of Alice Gruppioni, 32.

16 other people were reportedly injured from the crash, according to a report obtained by the Associated Press.

Campbell will be up against one count of murder, 17 counts of assault with a deadly weapon and 10 counts of leaving the scene when he goes to trial, AP reported. Seven other counts were dismissed on Wednesday.

The judge heard closing arguments concerning the grisly incident that occurred at the famed Southern California tourist destination.

One of Campbell's lawyers argued that the entire ordeal was just an accident, while witnesses and victims testified that the man driving the car appeared to be going on a wild rampage, aiming at tourists and vendors while he plowed through the crowds.

Almost 30 people present for the incident - some of whom flew from across the nation and the globe to testify - said they saw Campbell drive around barriers to get to hit the crowds of tourists.

Alice Gruppioni was visiting Venice Beach with her new husband on their honeymoon, AP reported.
