Kentucky police reported on Tuesday that an inmate who managed to escape from a low-level security facility in Lexington turned himself back in shortly thereafter due to the crippling, cold weather.
42-year-old Hartford resident Robert Vick successfully ran from the Blackburn Correctional Complex on Monday, according to the Associated Press.
But after he entered the frigid air of the recent cold front, with temperatures in the low single digits, he reportedly changed his mind, went into a motel nearby, and requested the desk clerk dial the cops, saying that he couldn't handle the artic weather any longer and had to turn himself in.
"This was definitely of his own volition," Lexington police spokesperson Sherelle Roberts told AP. "It's cold out there, too cold to run around. I can understand why the suspect would turn himself in."
Paramedics called to the motel, along with the Lexington Fire Department, performed a quick check-up and treated Vick for hypothermia Monday night. They then sent him back to Blackburn, Roberts stated.
Vick was most likely wearing his prison uniform - a khaki jacket, shirt and pants - at the time of his escape, according to Lisa Lamb, a spokesperson from the Department of Corrections who talked to AP.
Local weather reports from Lexington indicate temperatures were around 10 degrees most of the day, with a windchill of -20.
Vick served time at the correctional facility for burglary and criminal possession of a forged instrument, AP reported.
