Arizona State (10-3) had its seven-game winning streak snapped on Dec. 7 against Stanford. The Sun Devils were handed a 38-14 defeat by Stanford, the worst loss the team had suffered in more than three years, according to ESPN.
"I really thought we were going to win. I really did," Arizona State coach Todd Graham said, via ESPN. "We made mistakes and it took us a little long to make adjustments."
Quarterback Taylor Kelly led the offense with 3,510 yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 intereptions. Running back Marion Grice added 996 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground, and receiver Jaelen Strong caught 71 passes for 1,094 yards and seven scores.
Texas Tech (7-5), meanwhile, struggled down the stretch of the season and lost five straight games to close out the regular season. The season was made even worse by freshman quarterback Baker Mayfield informing coach Kliff Kingsbury of his intentions to transfer schools the following year.
"We had a good talk. He didn't give me many specifics as to why," Kingsbury said of the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year. "But he definitely emphasized that he was ready to move on."
Mayfield, a walk-on, threw for 2,315 yards, 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
