Brain Dead Girl Jahi McMath May Be Taken off Life Support: Family Finds New Long-Term Care Center to House 13-Year-Old Oakland Resident

13-year-old Jahi McMath, who lost brain activity after undergoing a tonsillectomy but whose family is trying to keep her alive, may be taken off life support on Monday.

McMath has spent more than two weeks on a ventilator at Children's Hospital in Oakland, Calif. after she was first admitted to the medical facility for a procedure on Dec. 9, Reuters reported. According to a court order, the hospital cannot remove the 13-year-old girl from the breathing device before 5 p.m. Monday without clearance from the family.

The teen's relatives reported over the weekend that they'd found a long-term care facility which had agreed to take Jahi in, but in order to be transported to the new location, the teen girl must have breathing ports and feeding tubes implanted. Children's Hospital has refused to do this, attorney representing the family Christopher Dolan told Reuters.

According to a statement released by Children's Hospital on Sunday, Dolan informed officials there that the family had found a long-term care facility that was considering taking in Jahi, but the hospital hadn't received any notifications or correspondence from the center.

Jahi was first admitted to Children's Hospital for a tonsillectomy that doctors hoped would help cure the teenage girl's sleep apnea and weight gain, along with other issues.

But after undergoing surgery, Jahi went into cardiac arrest, bled heavily and her brain swelled enormously. She was officially pronounced brain dead on December 12.
