Authorities in northern Kentucky are trying to end a standoff with a military veteran who is suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), FoxNews.com reported.
The incident was originally treated as a hostage situation though the unidentified veteran is now alone after releasing three children from the home Sunday morning. The situation began on Saturday around 4 p.m. after someone called authorities about a man in emotional distress in Latonia.
"He has released all the hostages, and from what I'm hearing, once he did that, our units on the scene heard some drilling, which could mean that he's possibly hunkering down for the long run," said Lt. Rick Saint-Blancard.
Though his name is unknown, Latonia News -- a Facebook page that covers news in the town -- identified the vet as Michael Vaughn and added his Facebook page had been taken down since the situation began. The Cincinnati Enquirer reported the veteran served in the Army and is suffering from PTSD.
The Facebook page for the local news outlet also said Vaughn commented on the standoff as it began.
"I appreciate everyone's comments, but this is something that will happen. KY Guard has the blame ... along with the Dept. of the Army and Sen. Rand Paul's office for not giving a damn about their wounded veterans who asked for help and failed to get it," he reportedly said.
Around 8 p.m. on Saturday, the vet began shooting at police officers though no one was injured. Police immediately cordoned off the area and asked for nearby residents to stay away from their windows.
Early Sunday morning, officials heard gunfire come from the house and had positive conservations with him a few hours after.
It is unclear what kind of firearms the vet is armed with. This story is still developing.
