Colorado School Shooting Update: Victim Claire Davis In Coma After Being Critically Wounded By Gunman Karl Pierson

A student at Arapahoe High School in Colorado is in a coma after being critically wounded by a gunman on Friday.

Karl Pierson, 18, shot 17-year-old Claire Davis in the head after allegedly seeking revenge on a faculty member on Dec. 13, according to WGNtv.com. The school shooting was reportedly over in less than two minutes.

Davis' family released the following statement to the media, according to KUSA:

Our beautiful daughter Claire Davis, has severe head trauma, as the result of a gunshot. She needs your continued prayers. We would like to thank our family, friends, the community and the equestrian community for their outpouring of love and support, as well as the school for their continued support of the students and teachers.

We would also like to express our gratitude to our first responders and the trauma team at Littleton Adventist Hospital for saving our daughter's life and quickly getting her into surgery. Claire is still in critical condition and your prayers are appreciated.

At this time we ask that you respect our wishes for privacy, for us and the hospital. Thank you for your continued support, love and prayers, the Davis Family.

Pierson was found dead of an alleged self-inflicted gunshot wound. According to multiple reports, Davis was a random victim of Pierson. Davis remains in critical condition.

"She is an innocent young lady, and she was an innocent victim of an evil act of violence," Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson told ABC News. "She probably was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Davis' classmates spoke highly of her, stating she was a good person who would never "hurt a fly," according to WGNtv.com. Classmate August Clary is trying to make sense of the tragedy.

"She was just a very sweet girl. She's really smart [and] really bright," Clary said.
