Arapahoe High School Shooting: Student Targeting Teacher Wounds One Student

An Arapahoe High School student who was targeting a specific teacher seriously wounded one fellow student before killing himself in Centennial, Colorado, Reuters reported.

The shooting began when the student brought a shotgun to school and said he wanted to confront a specific teacher, USA Today reported. Shortly after, students said they heard at least three gunshots in the hallway causing student, teachers and staff to lock themselves in classrooms.

"We were shaking, we were crying, we were freaking out,'' 9th grader Whitney Riley told CNN.

The teacher managed to escape and the shooter was found dead inside the school of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Sheriff Grayson Robinson said at a news conference, according to Reuters. The critically wounded student was taken to a hospital and is currently being treated for gunshot wounds, according to Jason Dunkel, spokesman for Littleton Adventist Hospital, Boston.com reported.

A second student was also being treated for minor injuries which may not be related to the shooting, Reuters reported.

At about 1:30 p.m., scenes from the school showed students exiting the building to the school track with their hands above their heads but no names of those injured have been released. The shooter's identity or his motive have also not be reported, according to CNN.

The Denver Post said there were also reported of a fire inside the school, which houses 70 classrooms and 2,229 students, CNN reported. All schools in the area are on current lock down. The shooting comes a day before the first Newtown shooting anniversary where gunman killed 20 children and six adults.

The high school is part of the Littleton school district shared with Columbine High School where the 1999 shooting that killed 12 people occurred, according to Reuters. The high school is also close to last year's Aurora movie theater shooting that killed 12 people.
