It is no secret that the first two seasons of the popular anime "Tokyo Ghoul" have been quite successful. While the second season diverged significantly from the manga, it still featured enough action and suspense to keep fans engaged. Of course, with the franchise's success, it is quite certain that it would be getting a new season.

This is here things start getting tricky.

After all, the second season of the hit anime diverged a lot from the source material, skipping out on whole story arcs and neglecting the development of characters who would otherwise be important in the next arcs of the series' story, reported Ecumenical News.

If the third season continues in the direction of the first two seasons, then it might be very possible that "Tokyo Ghoul Season 3" would feature a plot that is completely independent of the story's canon. Such directions in the plot, however, as proven by other big hits such as "Naruto," rarely pay off.

Yet another direction that the third season might follow is a complete reboot of the series. After all, the second season did feature an ending, regardless of how ambiguous the final scenes of the last episode were, making a possible reboot completely justifiable. Simply put, by rebooting the series, it would be possible for the anime to follow the source material more closely, according to Christian Today.

So far, a reboot for the "Tokyo Ghoul" franchise has become one of the most persistent rumors that have emerged about the coming third season. In fact, one such rumor, which involved Studio Pierrot planning on a quasi-reboot that follows the story from the perspective of Touka Kirishima, has triggered widespread criticism from fans.

Despite the overwhelming silence from the anime's producers, speculations about the third season's alleged release date have continued to come out of the rumor mill, with the most prominent ones being that "Tokyo Ghoul Season 3" would be released sometime in 2016, reported Cross Map.

Hardcore fans of the franchise need not fear, since despite the lack of concrete information about the third season's scope and release date, an official "Tokyo Ghoul" PS Vita title has been announced and confirmed for release this October.
