The streets of New York City are expected to be turned into one large art gallery in the month of October as street-artist Banksy plans on using the city as his canvas, according to the New York Times.
The British street-art legend who is perhaps more famous for his elusiveness, his true identity has never been confirmed and he may in fact be a fictional front for a group of artists, announced the show on his website. The show is titled "Better Out Than In. An artists residency on the streets of New York," according to the Los Angeles Times.
"For the next month Banksy will be attempting to host an entire show on the streets of New York," a message on the artist's website said.
Each piece of art is going to be accompanied with a phone number that people can call to listen to a recorded message about the piece. The first piece is located at 18 Allen Street near Chinatown and has one child standing on the back of another reaching out for a spray can, according to the Village Voice.
"Hello, and welcome to Lower Manhattan," the message for the first piece, entitled "The street is in play," said. "Before you, you will see a 'spray art' by the artist Ban-sky. Or maybe not; it's probably been painted over by now."
Rico Gagliano, cohost of the "The Dinner Party Download," believes that Banksy is a collective of artists, in part because of all of the different artistic styles Banksy has used, according to the Los Angeles Times.
"I've always found that the variety of mediums [Banksy] works with might indicate a collective," Gagliano said. "There are the signature stencils, which seem to come from a single hand, but also street 'installations' like his cut up British phone booth, sculptures like the Roman-style statue with a surveillance camera head, Xerox art like his manipulated British pound note. Most street artists have one style they hit over and over with some tweaking, whereas Banksy seems like the most ambi-artistic street artist ever."
The progress of the exhibit can be seen on the artist's website and locations can be found by going on twitter and using the hashtag #banksyny.
