New York Observer film critic, Rex Reed, faces backlash from Jenny McCarthy after comparing her cousin, Melissa McCarthy, to a "female hippo" and calling her "tractor sized" in a film review for "Identity Theft," reports E! News.
McCarthy was offended by Reed's comments in his movie review of "Identity Theft" last week about Melissa McCarthy and ttold the New York Observer Film Critic to "go to hell."
"I don't have the whole story, but, I do know that, after being in this business 20 years, it's really crummy that you get attacked in your personal life in general," McCarthy told E! News.
Reed in his movie review calls Melissa "cacophonous," "tractor-sized" and a "female hippo." Adding that the Oscar-nominated actress, is a "gimmick comedian who has devoted her short career to being obese and obnoxious with equal success."
"That's obnoxious in itself," McCarthy told E! News. "For anyone to attack like that, it's just wrong and hurtful, and it doesn't do anyone any good-not even Rex Reed, you know?"
This also enraged many readers and they commented that they found the review offensive.
Paul Feig, "Bridesmaids" director, also took to his Twitter account to vent out his frustration about the review.
"For his catty and school bully name-calling of the supremely talented Melissa McCarthy, I cordially invite Mr. Rex Reed to go f--k himself," Feig tweeted.
Reed appeared in an interview with AM radio host Mark Simone in defense of his review that enraged many readers and celebs.
"My point was that I object to using health issues like obesity as comic talking points," Reed said during his interview. "She is basing her career on being obnoxious and being overweight. And I don't think that's funny.
"I have too many friends that have died of obesity-related illnesses, heart problems and diabetes, and I have actually lost friends to this ... I don't care how much she weighs," he said. "I don't care how much Melissa McCarthy weighs. She wants to be fat? Mark, she's crying all the way to the bank."
