“NBA 2K” made a pretty huge deal about the return of Crews. There were hints, a review video and it was described like this on the NBA 2K14 Current Gen Features list:
The single-most requested game mode is back! Face off against opposing crews online using your MyPLAYER. Create your logo and face off in 5v5 battles with other crews featuring leaderboards and stats. (PS3 & Xbox 360 only)
However, not too long after gamers got a glimpse into the Crew Mode for “NBA 2K14,” there was an outcry that this version was not up to snuff. Instead it was called a “Glorified” Blacktop mode.
In an effort to further explain crews, Community Manager for 2K Sports Chris Manning put up a blogpost on Facebook.
In the post he explains this year’s crews. Gamers can chose between 3-on-3 half court or 5-on-5 full court andt he games will also be played on the blacktop. You can create your Crew and then recruit friends to join as you take on other crews in the NBA 2K universe.

Manning also focuses on the major improvements to gameplay overall such as defense, signature skills and player movement.
Unfortunately, for some avid fans of the NBA 2K10 and NBA 2K11 version of Crew Mode, this still won’t be enough. They will miss being able to play on hardwood with actual rules refs.
However, there may still be some hope here. The feature description specifies PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 only. Therefore, its possible 2K Sports could come with something new and improved for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Guess we’ll have to wait and see.
