Microsoft has sent invites to the media for the upcoming Surface event to be held in Chelsea, New York, September 23. The company is likely to unveil refreshed versions of its new Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 devices.

Microsoft making the limited period discount of $100 on Surface devices permanent was just a hint that it is ready to launch new versions. The world's largest software developing company has made it official by sending out invites to the media for its upcoming Surface event scheduled September 23, in New York. The company is likely to show off new Surface hardware but details about the mysterious product remain scanty.

Several reports have speculated that Microsoft will unveil the refreshed versions of its existing Surface and Surface Pro devices with latest specifications. A report from Neowin suggested that the Surface 2 RT will pack Tegra 4 CPU, 1080p screen, and 4GB RAM, two-step style kickstand, new battery cover called the Power Cover and will run on the newest Windows 8.1.

Microsoft plans to use Intel's new Haswell processor in its Surface Pro 2 devices in addition to the Surface 2 features. The new processor will give a boost to the battery life. Both the Surfaces will also get a new Docking Station accessory later this month.

The new Surface products are a new hope for Microsoft, following slow sales of its existing Surface RT.

According to a report from IDC, Microsoft sold 900,000 units during its first quarter while Apple took away the crown with a total of 19.5 million iPads during the first quarter. Microsoft has vigorously tried every effort to boost its tablet sales. It teamed up with third part sellers before expanding to 17 new commercial markets in North America and Europe to boost its tablet sales.
