The Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets have had the most covered quarterback controversies this training camp. The Eagles have settled theirs with the selection of Michael Vick. The Jets are still in the midst of their controversy as rookie Geno Smith battles with veteran Mark Sanchez. However, according to ESPN.com, there’s now another team that has snuck into the mix—the Oakland Raiders.
Up to this point in the preseason the Raiders starting quarterback situation seemed settled—recently acquired Matt Flynn would get the job. Unfortunately for Flynn, he had a dismal showing in the Raiders 34-26 loss to the Bears Friday, in which he was 3-of-6 with two interceptions.
The performance was so bad he was taken out of the game for third-year QB Terrelle Pryor. Pryor’s outstanding play may make Flynn’s starting job much less than a foregone conclusion.
"I think obviously we have to look at it. I think when you look at it I don't think Matt [Flynn] played well in this game," Raiders head coach Dennis Allen. "Obviously, I thought Terrelle [Pryor] came in and gave us a spark. I thought he played well in the game. I think that's something that we have to go and look at it."
Pryor was 7-of-9 for 93 passing yards and also had 37 rushing yards on four carries. He had one rushing touchdown and one passing touchdown.
"What I want to look at is who gives us the best chance to move the ball down the field and score points," Allen explained. "Obviously I'm not going to look at one night and base any type of decision on one night. I'll go back and I'll look at it and we'll see where we go from here.
The Raiders last preseason game will be played at the Seattle Seahawks on Aug 29.
