Mindy Kaling defiantly ended the third season of "The Mindy Project" on a cliffhanger, but fans will have to wait and see if the story continues after Fox canceled the show on Wednesday.

The network passed on a fourth season of the critically acclaimed but ratings-challenged series starring Kaling and Chris Messina, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Hope is not lost though.

Universal Television, the studio behind "The Mindy Project," is in negotiations with Hulu for a multi-season renewal, according to The Hollywood Reporter. A deal would most likely bring the show back for at least two more seasons.

The season finale ended with Danny (Messina) traveling to India to introduce himself to Mindy's (Kaling) parents and help mend his relationship with his girlfriend and fellow doctor.

"The Mindy Project" averaged only 2.9 million viewers (with time-shifting), but earned a respectable 1.4 rating among the coveted 18-49 year olds, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The show earned its best streaming views on Hulu.

Kaling told The Hollywood Reporter in March that she was confident her show had more stories to tell and refused to "create under the assumption of failure" for the third season finale.

"I do think there's more to tell, and I think fans would be disappointed not to see more adventures with these characters," she said. "But I came from a show ['The Office'] that I was on for eight seasons, and it continued for another year after that, so I am accustomed to long runs of television shows. I would be up for that challenge."

In other "Mindy Project" news, Messina received a Critics' Choice nomination for Best Actor in a Comedy Series on Wednesday.
