Warning: If you haven't watched last night's episode of "Grey's Anatomy," this story contains spoilers.

It's been a couple of hours and hopefully some of you "Grey's Anatomy" fans have had time to process the most shocking twist of the season - the death of Patrick Dempsey's character Derek Shepherd.

Dempsey, who played the preeminent neurosurgeon since season one, is now opening up about the show that made him a household name. The 49-year-old told Entertainment Weekly that his character's death wasn't a surprise, but something that "just kind of happened."

"It just sort of evolved. It really was something that was kind of surprising that unfolded, and it just naturally came to be," Dempsey told EW. "Which was pretty good. I like the way it has all played out."

He added: "Things happened very quickly, where we were like, 'Oh this is where it's going to go.' It just sort of unfolded in a very organic way. I don't remember the date. It was not in the fall. Maybe February or March. It happened very quickly. It was just a natural progression with the way the story was unfolding. It was like, Okay! This was obviously the right time."

Dr. Derek Shepherd was hospitalized after being involved in a serious car accident and later died when doctors, at a hospital that was not Grey Sloan Memorial, failed to properly diagnose the extent of his injuries. Unfortunately, the story of Derek's death was leaked hours before his final episode premiered.

Although, McDreamy has left the building, Dempsey revealed that he has wrapped his head around leaving his costars behind.

"I'm still processing it. This is part of the mourning process, the post-Grey's experience," he shared. "It was like any other day - just another work day. There was still too much going on. You're in the midst of it, not really processing it... I think any time an original cast member has left, there's always a void that will never be filled. Shepherd is a beloved character. People don't want to lose him. He's been in their lives for over 10 years. But it goes on, and it will evolve."

As for has his TV wife, played by Ellen Pompeo, a tearful Dempsey said, "It was magic. It's beautiful. We're like a married couple. It's 10 years, and it was magic from the beginning. Chemistry right away."

R.I.P. Dr. Patrick Dempsey.
